How to use the Sitemap Comparison Tool

  1. Choose the old sitemap file or files, then the new ones.
  2. Tick "Ignore the domain" to compare a staging site with the live site by path.
  3. Select Compare sitemaps, review the findings and download the CSV report.

Supported files and limits

  • The tool compares the files you choose. It does not crawl your website or check status codes, indexing or page content.
  • A URL missing from the new sitemap may still exist and may still be indexed.
  • Sitemap index files and compressed .gz files are not read. Unzip them and choose the child sitemap files instead.
  • Up to 100,000 URLs per side and 25 MB per file. URLs are compared exactly, so letter case, trailing slashes and query strings count.

Common questions

Does a missing URL mean Google removed my page?
No. It only means the URL is not in the new sitemap file. Check the live page and Search Console before drawing conclusions.
Can I enter a website address instead of files?
No. Download your sitemap files first (usually at /sitemap.xml) and choose them here. The tool never fetches anything from the internet.
What should I do with a sitemap index?
A sitemap index lists other sitemap files. Download each of those child files and choose them all on the matching side.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The comparison runs in your browser, and the files are never sent to our server or anyone else.
