How to use the Hreflang Tag Generator

  1. Enter one language version per line: a language code such as en or de-AT, a comma and the full page address.
  2. Add a fallback page (x-default) for visitors whose language is not listed, if you have one.
  3. Select Generate tags, then copy or download the tags and add them to the <head> of every listed page.

Supported files and limits

  • Every page in the set must carry the same complete list of tags, including a tag pointing to itself.
  • Language codes are two-letter ISO 639-1 codes, optionally followed by a two-letter ISO 3166-1 country code. Script codes such as zh-Hant are not supported.
  • The addresses are not visited. The tool does not check that the pages exist, are indexable or link back.
  • Up to 200 language versions.

Common questions

What is hreflang used for?
It tells Google and other search engines that several pages are versions of the same content for different languages or countries, so each visitor is shown the right one in search results.
Should I use en-UK for the United Kingdom?
No. The country code for the United Kingdom is GB, so the correct value is en-GB. The tool rejects en-UK for this reason.
What is x-default?
The page shown to visitors whose language or country does not match any listed version, often a language selector or the international home page.
Is my list of URLs uploaded?
No. The tags are generated in your browser, and nothing is sent to our server or anyone else.
