How to use the EU VAT Number Checker

  1. Paste VAT numbers, one per line, or choose a TXT or CSV file. Include the country prefix, such as DE or FR.
  2. Select Check VAT numbers and review the result and explanation for each number.
  3. Download the report as CSV if you need to keep or share it.

Supported files and limits

  • All 27 EU countries and Northern Ireland (XI) are covered. Greek numbers use EL; GR is accepted and corrected.
  • Spaces, dots and dashes are ignored. Numbers without a prefix can be checked by choosing their country.
  • Some French numbers have letters in their key, which has no published check, so only their format is checked.
  • Up to 1,000 numbers per check. Registration is not checked: that needs the European Commission's VIES service.

Common questions

Does a valid result mean the business is VAT registered?
No. It means the number is correctly formed and could exist. To confirm that a number is registered to a business, check it in the European Commission's VIES service, which answers live from national tax databases.
Why check the format first?
Most rejected numbers are typing mistakes: a digit swapped or missing. The check digit catches these instantly, before an invoice is sent or a reverse-charge sale is booked.
Are UK VAT numbers supported?
Since Brexit, GB numbers are not EU VAT numbers and are not in VIES. Northern Ireland businesses trading goods with the EU use the XI prefix, which is checked here.
Are the numbers uploaded?
No. They are checked in your browser and never sent to our server or anyone else.
