How to use the Redirect Rules Generator
- Paste old and new URLs, one pair per line, choose a CSV, or try the example.
- Choose the server or host and the redirect type, and optionally your domain.
- Select Generate rules, then copy or download them.
Supported files and limits
- Old URLs with a query string, such as product.php?id=42, are matched exactly, including the query.
- Chains are shortened so each old URL goes straight to its final page. Loops, duplicates and conflicting lines are reported and left out.
- Lines can be separated by a space, comma, tab or arrow. Full addresses on your domain are turned into paths.
- Up to 20,000 redirects. Check the rules on a test site before going live.
Common questions
301 or 302: which should I use?
Use 301 when a page has moved for good: search engines move its ranking to the new address. Use 302 only for temporary moves, such as a page that will come back.
Why shorten redirect chains?
Each extra step slows visitors down, and search engines may stop following long chains. Pointing every old URL straight to the final page avoids both.
Where do I put the rules?
Apache: in the .htaccess file in your site's root folder. Nginx: the map in the http block and the check in the server block. Netlify: a _redirects file in the published folder. Vercel: vercel.json in the project root.
Is my list sent anywhere?
No. The rules are generated in your browser and nothing is sent to our server or anyone else.
